Hi Elmo: Being a long time ERB fan, I'm delighted to explore this website. A month or so ago I posted an idea on the Take Me Back to Barsoom forum page for a John Carter movie trailer. You had expressed some interest in it so I thought I'd send you a link to the finished product in case you/your fellow bloggers were interested in checking it out. Take Care ! Bruce Kaplan

Just stopped in from JCii-- Nobs has long been another favourite of mine as I have had Airedales for many years. Glad to see someone writing about him! (The dog in the picture looks more like a Fox Terrier to me-- Airedales are black and tan.)

The first several books are in public domain, and so many of them have been recorded as audio books. But after that, Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc. still holds the copyrights. I'm not sure if any have been released as audio books ... which is not to say they haven't been. I'm just not aware of them.

Technically, the film does imply that Carter has been away from Earth for several years: Upon returning to the cave, he finds that both his clothes and Powell's corpse have rotted to dust.

I agree a montage of some sort would've been clearer, but perhaps they wanted to give the time spent on Mars a dreamlike quality? After all, how much time do we actually see elapse in films like Star Wars or The Wizard of Oz?

As for the Atmosphere Plant failing, I wonder if they omitted that idea because of the obvious similarity with Total Recall? For a movie that was already in danger of being criticized (however unfairly) as derivative, ending with the hero having to "give the people the air!" probably wouldn't have helped matters.

I agree. The whole "voice of Barsoom" could have been solved by showing Sola teaching JC the language. Then flash on the screen 6 months later. That way JC learns the language and ways of the Tharks. Everything seemed rushed.

Just saw the movie tonight. I was a bit disappointed in the first 20 minutes or so, but enjoyed the rest of it. Lynn Collins was spectacular as you said. Taylor was good, certainly fits the role physically, but he doesn't talk like a Southern gentleman. Perhaps it is me, but I have a hard time watching young actors in modern films--they don't always seem like "men" in the same vein as Heston, Eastwood, etc. I did love the scenes where Carter jumped from ship to ship.

The Tharks were great, although they looked a bit skinny? Woola was my favorite bit. Kantos Kan got a great scene.
